Supporting Yourself Through October

Everything You Need To Make October Great In A Holistic Way

Welcome October! I love this time of year. I love the crisp morning air that leaves a fog on the lake. I love the darker than dark nights that show case the stars even more brightly than normal. I love that everything is pumpkin spice! Lol okay so that last one I do love but I know not everyone does.

I live in New England and everything has a pumpkin spice option this time of year. I was cracking up because it’s so popular that even our local mechanic is on it with a sign that reads “Pumpkin Spice Oil Changes” Tell me that isn’t brilliant marketing.

But along with the fun and the foliage this month really kicks off the holiday season. As I said I live in New England and we do Halloween like no other. We have shops that only open for this month, people started decorating last month, and kids have picked out their costumes in Aug. Yes it is that big a deal. It is also filled with soccer games, football games, and apple picking. Friday night lights call for late nights, practices galore, and staying on top of well the rest of life.

SO how do you support yourself through the month? How do you do it all and stay on your game with a full cup of self-care and a pumpkin spice smile that you actually mean?

Let me help. There are some really simple practices that you can add to each day. Even tweaking somethings that you already do to make it that much better. Like I have said before my goal is to help you support yourself through the month with easy effective tools, tips, and tricks.

I want you to love your daily not just when your on vacation. I want you to have a piece of mind weekly if you can’t make it happen daily. Not just because you deserve it, because lets be real YOU DO, but because it’s good for your health, your kids, your significant other, and your work. Everyone wins when you take care of you!

So how can you support yourself through October?

Let me share some holistic tools that I use and share with my clients to bring that much needed relaxation, mental, and emotional support with you into the fall.

I will share with you my go to oils, crystals, teas, and tools for this month.

For October

Lets Start with Essential Oils:

I am a huge fan of Aroma Therapy. I use Essential Oil Emotion Release Technique, and essential oils in my home and private practice. I love that more and more people are opening up to the uses of essential oils and the great support they can give you. I do recommend safe practices of oils. So if you’re not familiar with how to use them please reach out as I’m a total safety first kind of person (Comes from my decades in Emergency Medicine).

Let me share the four oils I lean into for October here. These oils are focused at the energy of the month and I will share how they can support you. You can use them individually, together, or mix and match. You can use them day to day, or week to week. If your familiar with my guest spot on Midday With Jocelyn Radio show each Wednesday you know I pick out an oil of the week and share how that oil can support you mentally and emotionally. You can do that with these too assigning each oil a week by how they fall on your emotional need for the calendar.

The oils for October:

Cedarwood: The oil of community and connection. This soft woody smell has been used for centuries in Indigenous medicine. Known as the Eastern Red Wood this oil helps to ease tension and calm the nervous system. I love this oil it opens the heart to receive love. Cedarwood assists individuals in giving and receiving. It opens their awareness to connect with the community that they have and attract new support systems.

Orange Blossom: Also Known as (Neroli) this is a soft sweet smell that is great for relief from depression, anxiety, and stress. Known as the oil of Abundance its sweet citrus floral scent invigorates the brain like rays of liquid sunshine. It wakes up your inner child and brings spontaneity, playfulness, joy and fun back to the forefront. Reminding us that all things magical happen when we are having fun!

Clary Sage: This oil is every women’s best friend ! As it’s estrogen-like structure help to balance hormones. It’s a wonderful oil to have on hand for PMS, cramps, painful periods, and menopause. Clary sage can promote calm feelings of self-confidence. Known as the oil of clarity and vision it assists the individual in changing their perception.

Bergamot: This oil is great for handling stress and exhaustion. If you deal with seasonal depression this is a must have oil. The oil of self-acceptance it assists the user in clearing stagnant beliefs, limiting beliefs allowing you to love yourself unconditionally.

These scents each hold their own wonderful qualities. They all together remind use to be in touch with nature and community while calming the nervous system. Soothing us from feelings of being overwhelmed, overrun, and/or overworked.

Next Tools Is Earthing:

It is no wonder we are all re-calibrating, realigning, and re-balancing at this time of year. We are in the waning phase of the year. Moving into harvest season. The energy of this time is associated with the Earth and grounding is extremely beneficial. One way to ground is to do a meditation. But right now it’s also a wonderful time to do whats called Earthing. Because it’s still warm enough to be outside bare foot and it forces you to continue to get outside I highly recommend this practice.

How to practice Earthing:

Go out side. Go to a grassy or clean dirt space. Take your shoes off so you are barefoot soles to the Earth, if you aren’t already. This can be a great morning or evening practice to start or end your day. Feel your feet on the Earth. While you stand just breath. This can be a great time for you to do do a breathing exercise, give thanks, say a prayer, recite your affirmations, think about the wonderful day a head or remember all the great moments you had in your day. Whatever feels good to you. Or just bask in the silence and connection. By standing bare foot on the Earth you are creating a connection with the planet and the energy of that it has. As it gets colder and as the fall rain turns to snow in my region I have a basket of ocean stones and crystals that I sit with at my feet to simulate being outside during the colder seasons.

Earthing benefits you by releasing the built up energy (think static electricity, or balancing too much positive/negative energy) you have collected through out your day and releases from you. Which then has the benefits of improved sleep, help manage pain, and normalizes cortisol (a stress hormone) to reduce the stress response.

Take it up a notch and add some Yoga to your Earthing practice by doing Lotus Pose. This will have added benefits as Padmasana (lotus pose) improves awareness, attentiveness, opens up hips, strengthens ankles and knees. Keeps spine straight helping to develop good posture. While calming your nervous system.

Crystals:

Many people are falling in love with crystals these days. Which isn’t surprising as more and more people open up to holistic/ natural/ alternative healing and well-being. Whatever you are called to call it be open to seeing that there are many modalities, many ways of practicing, and what works for you may not work for everyone else and that is okay. That is why there are so many options. Also recognize that this doesn’t make the others wrong or less than. It just means you and your frequency need something else and that’s okay. I say this because the crystals I share may or may not align with what you have been taught. I have chosen these crystals because they have been given to me to share because of their frequency, the emotional support they can work with, and how they show up in the energy of the month.

Much like with the essential oils you can work with these crystals individually or all together. Lean into what feels right for you. During each month I like to take the crystals for that month and keep them on a plate on my desk. At the beginning of the month I like to get the crystals together cleanse them, clear them, and concentrate them for the month ahead.

The crystals for October:

Turquoise: A highly sought after stone for it’s beauty and metaphysical qualities turquoise is one of the most ancient protection stones. Used for its abilities to purify and create harmony. It aids with self-awareness and honest communication from the heart. It’s influence supports in the space of decision making with its ability to balance right and left brain thinking. Supporting the user in recognizing miracles all around them.

#buyerbeware There is no link to get turquoise because of the difficulty in finding quality stones online.

Lepidolite: Known for the “Mothers stone” it is often suggested to new mothers to work with as Lepidolite relieves worry, decreases overwhelm, and aids in creating emotional balance. Something everyone can benefit from, specially new mamas. It is also known for beauty. So placing one with your beauty products (or placing your beauty products around one) will charge and energize them enhancing their affects. ( You can thank me later.)

Blue Topaz: Blue Topaz has a peaceful energy. It is known as the stone of reflection. It can support and aid with overcoming writers block and increasing self confidence. Helps with communication, self realization, self expression, and self-love.

Rubellite/ Pink Tourmaline: Tourmaline is known for it’s protective qualities. Pink tourmaline is also supportive, balancing, and aids inspiration. It supports the heart and root chakra helping the carrier with support in self-love and acceptance.

Tea:

Tea can be an extremely soothing and relaxing drink. You can make your tea as simple as you would like or as ritual as you like. I drink tea in a bag from my favorite mug while my kids run around yelling and squealing, I also drink tea steeped loose leaf in a beautiful pot poured into fine bone China and sipped on my porch in silence taking time to inhale the aroma of the essences that are in the tea I’m enjoying. Try not to over complicate it, make it as enjoyable and easy to do as possible because then you will actually do it.

During this month I lean to a red clover, white tea, with rose. This is a tea that is soft and pleasant. I tend have this hand mixed since I have yet to find it in a pre made option. But you can always do multiple bags if you can’t get to a tea shop. This blend evokes balance and harmony. You are more than welcome to mix your own or find an herbalist to mix you up some. This is a wonderful tea to share with friends. So plan some together time and sip it often through out this month.

You can read on the box how to prepare the tea. General rule of thumb is to steep for 5 minutes with a lid. But I tend to vary depending on the tea and how I’m taking it. I like to add a teaspoon of wild honey from my favorite local farm ad a splash of milk. I typically enjoy this mid day while I’m taking a breathe in the afternoon.

I love sharing the things that make my life easier. The tools that help me create calm in the chaos of life and take my self-care up a notch. I know how hard this can be and it has taken me years to get to this point so don’t beat yourself up if you have difficulty remembering EVERYTHING. You don’t have to. If your just starting out pick one thing to implement and add it to your calendar with an alarm to remind you. If you have been building and want to do them all you can do the same thing by setting alerts on your calendar.
