Remembering 09.11.01

Never Forgotten

Today people across the nation, and around the world paused. They paused for the respect they hold for those lost. They paused for the grief that still weighs on their hearts. They paused for the memory they play over and over again in their heads.

Today people from all walks, all backgrounds, all religions, all ethnicities, and genders unified to remember 09.11.01

Today for some was like any other day even waking without remembering. Or even knowing. They went about their day.

For me and so many others we woke with this day on our heart and as the first bell tolled out at 8:36 am we were instantly taken back to that day. To that moment. If you were in The Gathering With Rebecca Packard, a group I host, you were maybe one of those on the live tapping with me. Or later in the afternoon if you were tuning into Mid Day With Jocelyn Davis you were part of our conversation of the support tools and the change of conversation and communication of this day.

I want to share that here. I want to share with you an experience and talk about the space of the void.

First let me take you back to the memory for me. I was 18 years old living as an adult away at college. I woke up and headed off to class per normal. I was sitting in Freshman English. Then there was a knock at the door and our professor was called into the hallway. As we all sat people started to get antsy. Our professor came back in the room, she holding back tears until she spoke. Then she no longer could contain them. She stated “ Students, there has been a tragedy. There has been accident and you all need to go back to your dorms. Must go back now and check in. Do not divert, go back and check in all classes have been canceled for today.” Now at 18 years old we had no idea the magnitude of what took place till we reached our dorms and started to run into other students and turning on TV. You see I was at Johnson and Wales University in Providence Rhode Island.

At that time a large population of the students were from all areas of New York and New Jersey. Specially in my building. The other thing that most people don’t know is that at the time they believed that there was a man on a train and that RI could be a target.

As the day unfolded myself and group of friends sat together with our friends who’s families were in the buildings, and in the City. As we endless tried calling getting busy signals for hours. To try to unwind we decided to go for a walk. That was when we realized it wasn’t just our classes that had been canceled but the entire city had gone on lock down. No one in. No one out. The streets were barricaded. There were tanks on some streets, and armed military on all the corners. The smoke from the city starting to wafted in off the ocean.

This shook so many of us. As it did the nation, and the world.

So I bring you back to today 18 years later. could you recount your story? Did you remember where you were? Who you were with? What you ate? What you smelled? Was it like a vivid dream for you?

This happens when we experience a trauma. Depending on your age you may recall people talk about the JFK assassination, or the Apollo 13 Mission the same way. Recalling each and every detail. These are three tragedies that our countries have experienced. These are traumas that we carry with us. Even if we weren’t actually there. This is the power of emotion.

When you experience multiple emotions on such a large magnitude at the same time you lock them into your body. Like a chemical stamp in your energy field and even your DNA that recalls this trauma.

For me working in this space of trauma release, and emotional well-being I had done so much work on this. On how this affected me. Because after a 15 year career in Emergency Medicine and years in the fire profession I had attended many memorials. I had friends who went to aid the after relief. I had friends who lost family. So I knew I needed to work on this. I needed to release in this area.

But it wasn’t till just under two years ago as I was sitting in a Emotion Freedom Trauma Tapping Training that I realized I hadn’t gotten all the way to the root of the issue. When we were watching a video that recounted time stamps and the name of the girl on the video was the same as my friend I sat with making calls for hours with, and other small things I would have never thought would be connected to the event. Triggered me. Having me come completely undone in the moment. For me I was in room filled with professionals and I was supported in moving through these emotions.

Not everyone has that though. Not everyone has people who can guide them in that way. I recognize this.

So today whether you remember the events of the day or not (as complete black out can also be a sign of trauma) I give you these tools to support you. They can help you if you use them.

My three go to tools for supporting emotional balance.

The first tool is “Breath In A Box”

This tools is a super simple breathing technique used in many meditations. It is also used by S.W.A.T. Teams and Snipers (I share this because let’s be real a groups of men in armor are not going to do anything that doesn’t work. Right?)

How to do it: You are going to breath in for a count of 4 (think 1 Mississippi...), Hold for a count of 4, Exhale for a count of 4, Hold for a count of 4. Repeat this sequence at least 4 times.

You will instantly start to feel your body relax. You may experience tingling. This takes less than 5 minutes to implement (I’m being super generous with that time) yet it will allow you to settle, redirect focusing on what is most important in that moment.

The second tool is “Tapping” (EFT)

I’m excited to see this more widely recognized recently as I have been using it for years. It is extremely effective and incredibly easy to use. I want to show you a short cut. Who doesn’t love that?! You won’t need any scripts and you won’t need to remember anything beside 1 tapping point.

How to do it: Take and put your index and middle finger on your clavicle (doesn’t matter right to left, or left to right), now drag your fingers down to just below the clavicle into the tender spot, you will gently start tapping, breathe and tap. If words/phrases/mantras pop into your head feel free to say them in your head or aloud. Know that you can simply just tap and breath. Continue till you feel at ease.

I love this because your body already knows what’s wrong. It already knows what needs to be fixed. Essentially by doing this your hitting your reset button to calm yourself down using an acupressure point. This allows your brain and body to relax. Allowing you to come back to calm.

The third tool is called a “Hold”

I really love this technique as it’s one that you can use and no one will be the wiser. You can simply sit and use the tool and breath and it will just look as though you are sitting and relaxing. Because well you will be.

How to do it: you can do this sitting or standing, hold your thumb (right hand to left, or left to right, it doesn’t matter), hold and breath till you feel your pulse, then switch to your index finger, hold and breath till you feel your pulse. Now switch hands and repeat.

You can repeat this as frequently as needed. Heads up you don’t need to squeeze your finger just gently grasp. You will notice that the more you do it the faster you will feel your pulse. Which is a great sign!

With these three tools you will empower yourself. Each of these tools is specifically chosen for their incredible abilities to aid in mental, physical, and emotional health. Also in their ease of use and that you can use them anywhere at anytime. These tools allows you to calm your amygdala, lower your heart rate, lower your breath rate, and release the calming hormones into your body. Allowing everyone and everything to settle down around you and your little. Giving you and your little focus, energy, and balance.

Here is a quick guide to these tools and a few extra (with some helpful videos too!) Here:
